Intersex Folks
Dec 29, 2023
Intersex is a term used to describe a variety of conditions in which an individual is born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit typical definitions of female or male. It’s important to note that being intersex is about biological variations, not about gender identity or sexual orientation.
Biological Aspects
Intersex conditions can involve variations in chromosome patterns, gonads (ovaries or testes), or genitalia. For example, a person might be born appearing to be female on the outside, but having mostly male-typical anatomy on the inside. Or a person may be born with genitals that seem to be in-between the usual male and female types.
Prevalence and Diagnosis
Intersex conditions are more common than most people realize. According to the Intersex Society of North America, it’s estimated that intersex traits occur in 1 out of every 2,000 births. However, these conditions often go unnoticed until puberty, or when trying to conceive.
Challenges and Advocacy
Intersex individuals often face unique challenges, including unnecessary ‘normalizing’ surgeries performed in infancy, stigma, discrimination, and lack of recognition in laws and policies. Advocacy groups argue for the rights of intersex people to make decisions about their bodies and identities, promoting understanding and acceptance.
